Why Connection Must Be Intentional

Recently, Bill and I had the privilege of participating in a marriage roundtable discussion at our church. As we listened to other couples share their stories, experiences, and lessons learned, one theme kept surfacing over and over again: Healthy marriages stay connected on purpose.
No one accidentally builds a strong marriage or wakes up one day and discovers they have drifted closer together. Connection requires intention.
And in today's world, there is no shortage of things competing for our attention.
Work.
Children.
Grandchildren.
Ministry.
Phones.
Schedules.
Responsibilities.
Life has a way of pulling couples in a hundred different directions at once. If we are not careful, we can spend our days working beside each other without actually connecting with each other.
One of the pillars in Pamper Your Marriage is Action. Action reminds us that love is more than a feeling. Love is something we do. Connection often begins with small choices such as a conversation instead of scrolling. A walk instead of another television show. Holding hands, praying together, sitting on the couch together after a long day, or making time for a date night. The little things often become the big things.
Our current season looks very different than many of the early years of our marriage. We live with our daughter and grandchildren. Bill spends much of his day helping care for our family. And boy oh boy life is busy. Sometimes our schedules are full and we get tired. Sometimes we have to be creative about finding time together. But we have learned that staying connected is not about having unlimited free time. It is about making the most of the time you do have. A few minutes of intentional connection can often accomplish more than hours spent in the same room distracted by other things.
The Lord does not simply say He loves us. He demonstrates His love again and again, He takes action to maintain relationship with His Bride. As husbands and wives, we reflect His heart when we intentionally pursue connection with one another.
At the roundtable, couples discussed many different topics. But perhaps one of the most important questions every married couple can ask is this:
"What am I doing this week to stay connected to my spouse?" Because healthy marriages are built one intentional moment at a time.
The strongest marriages are not necessarily the ones without challenges. They are often the ones that continue choosing each other through every season. Connection is rarely maintained accidentally. It is built intentionally.
One conversation.
One prayer.
One date.
One act of love at a time.
Your marriage doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to be pampered.
