Sabbath Together: Laughing While Remembering

Finding Joy Together Even in Seasons of Grief

This past Sabbath, Bill and I found ourselves laughing, singing, and making silly faces at a dueling piano bar with our family. And honestly? It was healing.

My daughter had arranged the evening for all of us as a way to celebrate my brother’s life together. What could have been only a night of sadness became something surprisingly beautiful - a night filled with stories, music, laughter, and connection.

As I looked around the table, I realized something important:

Sometimes Sabbath doesn’t look quiet.

Sometimes Sabbath looks like family gathered together, choosing joy in the middle of grief.

One of the pillars in Pamper Your Marriage is Sabbath Together.

And over the years, Bill and I have learned that Sabbath is about more than simply resting from work. It’s about:

  • reconnecting

  • delighting in one another

  • making space for joy

  • and remembering what truly matters

Life can become so heavy sometimes. Responsibilities. Loss. Schedules. Stress. But God, in His wisdom, created rhythms of rest because He knew our hearts would need restoration.

Joy and grief can sit at the same table. This night reminded me that grief and joy are not enemies. You can miss someone deeply, and still laugh. You can carry sorrow, and still enjoy the people sitting beside you. There was something healing about hearing music, laughing together, and simply being present with one another.

Sometimes couples become so focused on surviving life that they forget to enjoy each other.

But marriages need fun memories and moments where burdens are set down for a little while. This night reminded me that sometimes the most spiritual thing a couple can do is simply laugh together again.

As we celebrated my brother’s life together as a family, I left feeling grateful.

Grateful for family, memories, and a husband who continues walking beside me through every season of life.

Your marriage doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be pampered.
