Rest Is the First Step - The Meditation Pillar in Marriage

This past Sabbath, Bill and I had one of those moments where you just know…
God is speaking. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But clearly.
A Mountaintop Vision… Without the Path
Before our devotional time, we had been reading Crazy Faith by Michael Todd together.
One line stood out to us:
"God will either give you the path to the mountaintop…or the mountaintop view without the path."
And that hit home. Because I’ve been carrying a vision. A mountaintop vision.
I can see it. I can feel it. I believe God has placed it in my heart. But if I’m being honest…
I don’t see the path to get there. And Bill, in his quiet and faithful way, said something that meant so much to me. He wrote in his journal that he was asking God to show him the path to Jodie’s mountaintop vision. That’s who he is. He doesn’t just stand beside me—he walks with me.
In that same conversation, I told him something important. “I don’t just need you to follow me…I need us to see the path together.” Because marriage isn’t one person carrying the vision while the other follows. It’s a partnership. A unity. A journey we walk side by side.
Then Came Hebrews 4
As part of our daily rhythm, Bill reads to me everyday from The Passion Translation chronologically. And that day… it just so happened that the next chapter was Hebrews 4.
We didn’t plan it. We didn’t pick it. God did.
And as we listened, something stood out immediately. The word “rest”. Over and over again. We counted it. Fourteen times in one chapter.
And in that moment, it became clear:
Rest is the first step on the path to the mountaintop vision.
Not striving. Not figuring it all out. Not forcing movement.
But resting.
Trusting.
Being still enough to hear God’s direction.
In Pamper Your Marriage, the Meditation pillar is about slowing down long enough to truly absorb God’s Word. Not just reading it. But sitting with it. Letting it speak. Letting it shape your thoughts, your emotions, and your decisions. That’s exactly what happened to us. We didn’t rush through Hebrews 4. We noticed a word. We sat with it. We asked what God was saying through it. And in that stillness, He gave us clarity. Meditation is how we learn to recognize His voice.
Take a moment to consider:
• Are we rushing through God’s Word or truly sitting with it?
• What word or phrase is God highlighting to us right now?
• Are we trying to force the path… instead of resting in Him first?
Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t in doing more.
It’s in slowing down long enough to understand what God is already saying.
If you have a vision…
If you feel God calling you higher…
If you’re wondering how you’ll ever get there…
Start here:
Rest.
Because rest is not the absence of movement.
It is the beginning of direction.
Your marriage doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be pampered.
