Let Them Hear Your Heart

There we were, standing inside this big wooden heart at Dollywood. And when I looked at this picture later, I started thinking about how easy it is to stand beside the person you love every day and forget to tell them what is still in your heart.

Bill and I have been together long enough that I could easily assume he already knows how I feel about him. He knows I love him. He knows I appreciate him. He knows I am thankful for him. But does that mean I should stop saying it? Absolutely not.

One of the pillars we stand on in Pamper Your Marriage is Praise Your Mate. In our Pamper Your Marriage Daily Workbook, we encourage couples to seek goodness in their spouse like it is a hidden treasure. I love that picture. Because if you go looking for treasure, you are intentionally searching for something valuable.

What if we did that with our spouse? Instead of noticing the thing they forgot to do, look for what they did do. Instead of pointing out the irritating habit, remember the character qualities that made you fall in love with them. Instead of assuming they already know how you feel, tell them.

Praise isn't flattery. It is intentionally recognizing what is good and giving voice to it.

I want to be one of the voices reminding him of who he is. And I need that from him too.

So this week's PAMPER challenge is simple:

Let them hear your heart.

Tell your spouse what you admire about them.

Tell them something they do that you appreciate.

Remind them of something that first made you fall in love.

Tell them something you still find attractive.

Catch them doing something good and SAY IT.

Don't just love them silently.

Praise them out loud.

Because sometimes the person standing right beside you, right there inside the heart, still needs to hear what is inside yours.

Your marriage does not need to be perfect, it just needs to be pampered.
