MEDITATION - Rooted in the Word Together

There is something special about serving God beside your spouse. Bill and I have been given a new opportunity to do just that. We have been asked to lead a Rooted group at our church, and we are excited about what God is going to do - not only in the people He has entrusted to us, but in our marriage too.

As we begin this journey, we will be studying God's Word together, praying together, having conversations about what we are learning, and helping others grow deeper in their relationship with the Lord. And as I looked at this picture of us on our first night, I immediately thought about another pillar of Pamper Your Marriage:

M - Meditation on God's Word

Because if we want our marriage to be deeply rooted, we have to be intentional about what we're planting those roots into.

WHAT ARE WE ROOTED IN?

Marriage can be rooted in a lot of things.

Our feelings, routines, children, finances, our plans for the future, and even our love for one another. But all of those things can change.

The Word of God does not.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:24:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

That's what I want for our marriage. I don't just want Bill and me to know Scripture individually. I want the Word of God to become part of the language of our marriage.

When we have decisions to make - what does the Word say?

When we're struggling - what does the Word say?

When one of us is discouraged - what does the Word say?

When we're praying for our children, our family, our ministry, or our future - what does the Word say?

And even when everything is going beautifully, I want us returning to His Word together.

Because the deeper our roots grow into God's truth, the stronger our marriage can stand when the storms come.

LEADING AND LEARNING TOGETHER

One thing I'm especially looking forward to about Rooted is that although Bill and I are the leaders, we're still students too. We don't have everything figured out. We're going into this expecting God to teach us, stretch us, speak to us, and show us things in His Word that we need for this season of our own lives and marriage. And I love that we get to do that side by side. There is something intimate about discovering God's truth together and then talking about what He is showing each of you. That's one of the reasons Meditation is such an important PAMPER pillar. We aren't simply reading Scripture to check off another spiritual activity. We are allowing God's Word to get inside of us - to shape the way we think, speak, love, forgive, serve, and respond to one another.

Psalm 1 describes the person whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on it day and night as:

...a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither...” - Psalm 1:3

Rooted.

That's exactly what I want. For my relationship with God. For our marriage. And now, for the group God has entrusted to Bill and me.

THIS WEEK'S PAMPER CHALLENGE

Don't just read God's Word separately this week.

Get into the Word together.

Choose one Scripture.

Read it together.

Talk about it.

Ask each other, “What is God showing you through this?”

Then ask an even more important question:

“How can we live this out in our marriage?”

You don't need to preach to one another. You don't need an hour-long Bible study.

Just open the Word and invite God into the conversation.

Because a marriage that is going to withstand the changing seasons of life needs roots that go deeper than feelings.

It needs to be rooted in Truth.

Bill and I are excited to see what God has waiting for us in this new Rooted journey.

And once again, I'm reminded that the same God who is teaching us how to pamper our marriage has already shown us how beautifully He pampers His Bride.
