Love in Action: Serving Together in Ministry

The Action Pillar

"Serve one another humbly in love." — Galatians 5:13

(A little note before we begin...)

First, forgive us for getting this week's blog out a little later than usual. Bill and I are currently enjoying a much-needed vacation together, and we've been soaking up every minute of this precious time. We'll share more about that adventure in next week's blog.

For now, I wanted to share something that has been on my heart since our Return to the King retreat in Kentucky.

One of my greatest joys in marriage is serving alongside my husband. While I was teaching, praying with the women, and leading the retreat, Bill quietly stepped into another ministry that often goes unnoticed.

He served, he planned every meal (along with Joy), he grocery shopped, he cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He made sure ten women were well fed, cared for, and never had to worry about a thing.

The funny part? We didn't take a single picture of him serving. Not one. Instead, the picture you're seeing is of the beautiful women he poured himself into all weekend. They are the reflection of his service. Every smile in this photo represents someone who was loved, not only by the ministry, but by the quiet faithfulness of a husband willing to serve behind the scenes.

Throughout the weekend the ladies kept coming up to me saying things like,

"Bill spoiled us."

"The food was amazing."

"Your husband is such a servant."

As his wife, hearing those words blessed my heart more than I can describe.

Because that's who Bill is.

He doesn't need a microphone, or doesn't need recognition.

He simply loves people through action.

And that's exactly what the Action Pillar is all about.

Love isn't merely spoken.

Love is demonstrated.

Sometimes it looks like flowers.

Sometimes it looks like a date night.

Sometimes it looks like folding laundry.

And sometimes...

It looks like standing over a hot stove all weekend so others can encounter Jesus without worrying about their next meal.

Jesus Himself said,

"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve..." (Mark 10:45)

Every time Bill serves, I'm reminded of Christ. His willingness to quietly support the ministry allows me to walk in the calling God has given me, and together we become stronger than either of us could be alone. I truly love doing ministry with my husband.

That is teamwork. That is partnership. That is marriage in action.

How can you put the Action Pillar into practice this week?

Ask yourself:

"What can I do to lighten my spouse's load this week?"

Not because they asked. Not because they're keeping score. But simply because love takes action. You may never receive applause for your service. You may not even get a picture. But your actions could become the very thing someone else remembers long after the weekend is over.

One More Thought...

Although Pamper Your Marriage was written with married couples in mind, these principles don't stop at marriage.

The PAMPER principles are biblical relationship principles. Whether you're dating, engaged, single, building friendships, serving alongside others in ministry, or investing in your family, these same principles apply.

Prayer.

Action.

Meditation.

Praise.

Encouraging yourself in the Lord.

Reconciliation.

Healthy relationships don't happen by accident. They are built one intentional choice at a time.

Whatever season of life you're in, ask yourself:

"How can I love someone more like Christ today?"

One simple action could change the course of a relationship.

Thank you Bill for being a biblical example of a husband to Jodie. Your relationship is admirable. Thank you being a humble servant and man of God. Thank you for your thoughtfulness in preparing our meals at the “Return to the King” Reatreat in Kentucky. We all saw displays of your love for Jodie. It was a blessing to witness! I thank God for the both of you.

Love, Joanna
