Every Adventure Begins with One Step

The Action Pillar

One of the things I love most about Bill is that he is always willing to come along on my adventures. Sometimes he's a little more... cautious than I am. Take the Freedom 250 Festival, for example. We spent a couple of evenings walking the fairgrounds together. We rode the Ferris wheel, explored the exhibits, listened to music, and made memories celebrating America's 250th birthday. By the end of the night, we were exhausted.

Between all the walking, the summer heat, and riding our bikes to the festival, our legs were tired, and let's just say our tailbones reminded us we aren't twenty anymore!

One of my favorite moments happened before we even arrived. We rode our bikes through the city, and as we approached a crosswalk, Bill informed me that we needed to get off and walk our bikes across the street. Apparently, somewhere in Bill's mental "rule book," that's exactly what you're supposed to do. I smiled, stayed on my bike, and pedaled right across. He looked at me as if I had just broken a federal law. Eventually, he laughed and came along anyway. That's one of the many reasons I love him. He helps keep me grounded. I help convince him that maybe... just maybe... the rule book has a little flexibility.

When people think about strengthening a marriage, they often imagine expensive vacations or elaborate date nights. Those things are wonderful. But healthy marriages are usually built in much simpler ways. Choosing to go, to spend time together, to make memories.

Choosing to laugh and to try something new.

The Action Pillar reminds us that love isn't simply something we feel. It's something we do.

Some of our favorite memories have come from ordinary days that became extraordinary simply because we experienced them together.

Jesus didn't just tell us He loved us. He demonstrated it. He walked with people. He traveled with His disciples. He shared meals. He attended celebrations. His love was always accompanied by action. As husbands and wives, we reflect His heart when we intentionally choose to spend time together and invest in one another.

Looking back, I probably won't remember every attraction we visited. But I will remember laughing with Bill on our bike ride. I'll remember the Ferris wheel. I'll remember the conversations and being together. Because that's what marriage is really about.

Not checking off another item on the calendar. But choosing each other again and again.

Every adventure...

Every date...

Every walk...

Every bike ride...

Every memory...

Begins with one intentional step.

Your marriage doesn't have to be extravagant.

It simply needs two people willing to keep showing up for one another. After all, the greatest adventures aren't measured by how far you travel. They are measured by who is riding beside you.
